ASN's New Digital Ecosystem for Association Leaders

Posted By: Angela Kisskeys Association Updates,

After a meaningful stretch of growth and evolution, Associations North has launched a new website and database. This isn’t just a redesign; it is a digital ecosystem.

And candidly, I care deeply about this one. Not because it’s a website, but because of what it represents for our members, our team, and the future of Associations North. This is a strategic technology upgrade was built intentionally around real pain points association leaders face and aligned directly with our long-term strategy.

Why This Needed to Happen

Association leadership has evolved dramatically over the last decade and our members’ needs have changed.

Association professionals are navigating:

  • Board governance alignment challenges
  • Pressure on non-dues revenue
  • Workforce recruitment and retention strain
  • Technology integration demands
  • Higher and faster member expectations

At the same time, Associations North has grown. Our Sync groups have deepened. Our signature experiences have strengthened. Our community has expanded.

At Associations North, technology is part of how we deliver value. It should make engagement easier, connection stronger, and leadership development clearer. This upgrade ensures alignment between our mission, our members, and the technology behind the experience.

Pains and Gains

Three years ago, I was introduced to the concept of Pains and Gains value proposition work and it has fundamentally changed how I view our work.

The idea is simple: understand the real pain, clarify the desired gain, and build intentionally from there.

But the discipline of truly listening for pain not assuming it is powerful. That lens has shaped our programs, our messaging, our strategy and now our technology. This platform is built around that mindset.

Not “What do we offer?” but “What challenge are you navigating?” Not “Here’s our menu.” but “Here’s your next step forward." This shift genuinely excites me and yes -- I can talk for days about it.

Design Around Leadership Reality

How does the Pains and Gains model translate to design strategy? Instead of organizing our site around internal departments like Membership, Events, Committees — we organized it around desired leadership outcomes:

  • Discover Associations North
  • Solve Challenges
  • Lead with Confidence
  • Grow Together
  • Elevate Impact + Influence

You don’t think in silos all the time. You think in challenges or pain points that directly impact your work:

  • “My board isn’t aligned.”
  • “We need new revenue streams.”
  • “Engagement isn’t where we need it.”
  • “Hiring the right people is harder than ever.”

The Associations North site mirrors the leadership journey we see every day: A leader is carrying a challenge, finds clarity through learning, gains strength through community, creates impact at their association, and over time builds trust in Associations North as their partner in advancing both their leadership and their organization.

Pain → Learning → Community → Impact → Trust

Every page answers two essential questions: What challenge are you navigating? and what’s the next step forward? This is intentional and directly inspired by our pains and gains value work—meeting leaders where they are and helping them move forward.

A Member Ecosystem

Our new platform allows us to adapt quickly, highlight emerging leadership challenges, integrate learning and community seamlessly, and enhance functionality as needs evolve. This isn't just a website, it is a digital member ecosystem.

Association Member Digital Ecosystem Definition: a connected digital environment where technology, learning, community, and resources work together to support engagement, leadership development, and meaningful member experiences.

Phase one was to match our technology to our culture and strategy. In phase two, we will continue listening. We will continue refining. We will continue enhancing. That is part of our culture and now it’s built into our technology.

What This Means for You

If you’re an Associations North Member here’s what you’ll experience — not just visually, but functionally:

  • A more intuitive member dashboard called, Member Compass
  • Simplified event registration (yes, you can now effortlessly register multi-attendees at one time) and membership renewal
  • A smoother login experience with improved secure data management
  • Member Compass allows you to update organizational information and self-manage rosters
  • More robust, searchable Member Directory
  • Mobile-friendly experience
  • Stronger integration between learning, events, and community — all connected in one cohesive system

Behind the scenes, this allows us to align membership, participation, and engagement in a way that feels seamless rather than segmented. That means smarter communication, more relevant content, and less friction overall.

Ultimately, this upgrade strengthens our ability to deliver what matters most to you. The ability to mine additional data to serve you better makes us smile. And hey, we are learning to. So, if you have a question, don’t hesitate to contact your Associations North team. Like this investment into the future, let us know. Have a question or feedback, we're here to listen.

An Important Note of Gratitude

We all know technology upgrades are not a solo sport.

I’m deeply grateful to our Board of Directors for their belief in investing forward and for trusting the vision. Strategic technology decisions require courage and long-term thinking. Their support made this possible.

To my rockstar teammate Laurel Trost — you handled the spreadsheets, the surprises, the integrations, the sprint, and the inevitable “why is this happening?” moments with a smile and relentless follow-through. This lift was significant, and you carried it with heart.

And to our new technology partner, Novi AMS — thank you for your partnership and patience as we brought our very detailed vision (and approximately one million follow-up questions) to the table. You didn’t just implement a new system, you partnered with us to build a foundation that supports our strategy and our growth.

I am incredibly proud of what we’ve built and even more excited about what our Associations North community will do with it.

Because the best is not behind us — it’s what’s ahead! ⭐

Thank you,
